The refurbishment at International House was a process of improvement by cleaning, decorating, and re-equipping. It also included elements of retrofitting with the aim of making the building more energy efficient, sustainable, and modern. The lifecycle of a building has significantly been extended and its carbon footprint reduced by the effective refurbishment, as such it was a key component in achieving a circular economy.
International House exercised the following approaches for the refurbishment.
Addressing the superficial aspects of a building such as decoration and finishes, lighting, and some other minor works.
Identified broken, damaged, non-efficient spaces, items or areas where improvements were required.
A more comprehensive change in the character of the building, but uses much of the original structure and fabric.
Both have gained currency as business and landlord it is imperative to embrace the idea that we shouldn’t waste things that still have life in them just because they have been used once or are a bit tired.
